How to recognize an abusive relationship

Relationships do not need to be violent in order for them to be dangerous or abusive. If you are feeling scared or controlled in your relationship, it is likely that you are in an abusive relationship. It is important that you recognize your relationship as an unhealthy one and that you take action to safely leave the situation so that you can live the life that you deserve.

There are many services that are available to people who feel trapped in abusive relationships. The National Domestic Violence Hotline can provide expert advice and guidance for victims.

How do I know if I'm in an abusive relationship?

Abuse can occur in many different ways. You may feel that you are being controlled through your finances or through curfews assigned to you by your partner. You may also be aware that your partner is stalking you or demanding to look through personal information, for example, searching your phone or computer. Perhaps you are threatened with abuse or given consequences for certain behavior. None of this behavior is acceptable in any healthy relationship.

What can I do to safely change my situation?

If you have a support network in the area, you should talk to friends and family about your situation. You may be able to make plans with them in order to keep you and your children safe. If you believe that you are in danger, it is important to call the police.

Domestic abuse is a criminal offense, and you have the right to protect yourself from abuse in the state of Minnesota.
